Gale worked as a shoemaker/farm laborer and at the age of 24 started tinkering with clocks.In 1869 he got his first patent and in 1870 teamed up with Welch Clock Company. He is most famous for his Astronomical gallery clock he patented in 1871. The name for this model is Damrosch. Walter Damrosch was a German/American music conductor who founded Damrosch Opera Company, and has his name sake in a park in New York, that includes the Guggenheim Band shell. The case is made of walnut, and is in excellent condition without any breaks or missing parts.
Eastlake style carved crest, sides, bottom, and calendar door. The perpetual calendar has its own door with a paper dial, black numerals, 31 date, the month, and day. The time dial is paper with black Roman numerals and is in wonderful condition. Big brass pendulum bob that has an ebonized wooden stick, and brass dial rings. On the back is the Welch label with the model name, inside is the Gale perpetual label.Dimensions are Height 41.5", Width 15", Depth 5.5, and Weight 14 lbs.
